• Best for: sensitive or dry skin, people who find honey wax painful, and anyone prone to redness or bumps after waxing.
• Keep in mind: it costs more than honey wax, but many clients find the smoother, less irritated finish worth it.

Gel wax: peel-off precision

Gel wax is applied a little thicker, left to set, and then peeled off without a cloth strip. Because it grips the hair more than the skin, it's popular for small or delicate areas.

• Best for: short or coarse hair, the face, underarms and bikini line.

Before your appointment

1. Let hair grow to about 5 mm, roughly two to three weeks after shaving. Too short and the wax can't grip it.
2. Gently exfoliate a day or two before, not on the same day.
3. Skip moisturiser, oil and body lotion on the day so the wax holds well.
4. Tell your therapist if you use retinol or acne medication, or have sunburn, cuts or rashes. Waxing over these can irritate or damage the skin.

Aftercare for smooth, bump-free skin

• Avoid hot showers, saunas, swimming and the gym for 24 hours.
• Keep waxed skin out of strong sun for a day or two, and use sunscreen on exposed areas.
• Wear loose, breathable clothes over freshly waxed skin.
• Start gentle exfoliation after two to three days to help prevent ingrown hairs.
• Moisturise daily with a light, fragrance-free lotion.
